How a UK Energy Company Leveraged Home Mover Data to Retain Customers, Acquire New Ones, and Reduce Bad Debt with JetStream

Strategic Innovation and Clean Room Practices Drive Industry-Leading Results

Introduction

One of the UK’s largest energy suppliers identified home movers as a key audience for customer retention and acquisition. They also recognised that the same trigger could help identify customers at risk of defaulting on their energy bills.

Challenges

The company faced several critical obstacles:

  1. Data Privacy Restrictions
    • Previous attempts to use third-party home mover data required sharing customer data externally, which posed unacceptable privacy and compliance risks.
  2. Limited Data Matching Capabilities
    • The company lacked an efficient way to match home mover data to its customer base.
  3. Inadequate Home Mover Data
    • Other data providers couldn’t deliver timely or accurate updates, making it difficult to identify the optimal moment for retention, acquisition, or debt prevention efforts.

The Solution

To overcome these challenges, the company partnered with JetStream, implementing a two-part solution:

  1. Data Clean Room Matching
    • With customer data already hosted in Snowflake, the company simply installed JetStream within their environment.
    • JetStream enabled real-time, privacy-preserving matching to datasets in the JetStream Data Marketplace.
    • JetStream combined multiple home mover datasets into a single comprehensive source for matching to the clients customer database
    • Using match-keys, the company achieved high-accuracy matching without exposing customer data or encountering issues from inconsistent address formatting.
  2. Comprehensive, Timely Home Mover Data
    • JetStream provided near real-time (weekly updates) of home mover data, enabling the company to:
      • Retain existing customers moving to a new home.
      • Acquire new occupants at previously supplied properties.
      • Flag customers likely to move without settling their bills, enabling proactive debt management.

Implementation

The rollout occurred in two phases:

  • Phase 1: Evaluation and Pilot
Over three months, the company used JetStream to match customer data with home mover data available in the JetStream Data Marketplace and ran targeted marketing campaigns.

The pilot successfully met objectives for retention, acquisition, and bad debt reduction.

  • Phase 2: Full Rollout and Expansion
Upon successful pilot completion, the use of JetStream to flag customers who were moving home was implemented as a “business as usual” process.

The company also began exploring additional datasets in the JetStream Data Marketplace —such as property and household variables—to identify customers likely to adopt solar panels or heat pumps, based on property suitability and customer demographics.

Results

JetStream delivered measurable improvements:

  • Significant reduction in customer churn among home movers
  • Increased acquisition of new occupants at previously supplied properties
  • Lower incidence of unpaid bills from customers who moved without notice
  • Improved data security, minimisation and compliance
